Congratulations on your pregnancy!
As you get ready for the arrival of your little one and navigate through your lengthy to-do list, scheduling a professional maternity session might feel like just another task. However, a maternity photo shoot can be a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the strength and beauty of your body during this remarkable journey. It’s a chance to capture this special moment in your life, sharing the joy of welcoming a new baby with your partner and loved ones.
If you’re new to maternity sessions, you might be unsure about how to prepare or what to expect. To help you make the most of your session and ensure you get images that you’ll cherish, I’ve compiled a helpful guide with everything you need to know.
SCHEDULE YOUR SHOOT EARLY
If you have a specific photographer in mind, it’s best to book your sessions as early as possible to secure the photographer’s availability. The earlier you book your session, the better. Most clients call to book around week 20 or right around the time they find out the sex of their baby. To get in touch with me, go to my Contact page or scroll down for my contact information below.
BOOK YOUR SHOOT FOR YOUR THIRD TRIMESTER
The best time to take maternity photos is 28-36 weeks when the bump is already showing and you'll likely feel most comfortable moving and posing. Although you can schedule your maternity session later in your pregnancy, posing and standing for extended periods may become more challenging.
DISCUSS YOUR VISION WITH YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER
Every photographer and expectant mother is unique. Share your dos and don’ts with your photographer. Let them know which images would be most meaningful to you and whether you are open to partial or implied nude poses. Clear communication before your session ensures your photographer can plan accordingly and capture the images that reflect your comfort and vision. This is the time to go over your desired photography style, outfits, inspiration images, any family shots you may want with your partner and other preferences (such as using MUA vs DIY to prepare for the shoot).
DECIDE WHOM TO BRING WITH YOU
Your family members are absolutely welcome at your maternity session, especially if you want to include your spouse or other children. Just keep in mind that extra people can be a distraction and can even make you feel less comfortable in front of the camera, so avoid bringing friends and extended family members along.
PAMPER YOURSELF
Your hands will be prominently featured in nearly all of your images, so it's worth ensuring they look their best! Treating yourself to a professional manicure is a wonderful way to pamper yourself before your maternity session.
While some photographers may offer makeup and hair services as part of your session, others may leave these choices up to you. Opting for a professional makeup artist ensures you look your absolute best. A skilled artist understands how to enhance your features for stunning photographs. If you choose to do your own makeup, consider going slightly bolder than usual to ensure your eyes and lips are well-defined in your images. If you are not sure where to find a good makeup and hair professional, do not hesitate to reach out as I partner with trusted artists and would be happy to connect you with them.
Be sure to schedule something fun for after the shoot as you will be fully dolled up and ready to rock that makeup and hair!
CHOOSE WHAT TO WEAR
Whether you prefer a casual look with jeans and a blouse or opt for an elegant maternity dress — or perhaps both — take some time before your session to carefully select your outfits. Ensure they fit well and reflect the style you envision. Remember that while looking good in your photos is essential, comfort is equally vital. Pack plenty of clothes made from stretchy fabrics, such as maxi dresses, which can be especially comfortable and stylish. If you need to update your wardrobe, this is a perfect opportunity to go shopping for a few new pieces.
Keep in mind that your baby bump will be the focal point of your images, so avoid bright colors or loud patterns that may distract. Opt for neutral colors and jewel tones instead; they complement any background and flatter all skin tones.
Don't forget to choose attire for any family members joining the session, ensuring their outfits complement rather than clash with yours. Our studio provides a variety of gown options; schedule an in-person consultation to explore and discuss them.
RELAX AND TRUST THE PROCESS
It might be easier said than done, but try to relax and enjoy your session without worrying too much. Your photographer will guide you through each pose and position, making the process straightforward. Just be yourself — natural and beautiful!
